PARKS von Andrea Wandinger
HAMBURG Picture Book Prize 2025
Andrea Wandinger describes her book as follows:
“Parks – Urban Greenery for All” is an illustrated non-fiction picture book about the history and future of urban parks. It is somewhere between a narrative non-fiction book and a picture book and conveys knowledge in a pictorial and associative way.
The double pages are thematically structured and show parks as changeable spaces: sometimes a place of retreat, sometimes a stage for social debate, sometimes a field of experimentation for sustainable urban development. In addition to explanatory texts, there are atmospheric picture series that make historical developments, landscape architectural ideas and social dynamics visually tangible.
The result is a book that opens up new perspectives for readers on their surroundings – and makes parks tangible not only as part of the past, but also as active spaces of possibility for the cities of tomorrow.
This is a self-confident, factual and reflective description of the challenging project – and the submitted double-page spreads and the extensive storyboard absolutely live up to this claim!
What Andrea Wandinger herself does not say is that she has developed a highly independent, fresh and painterly illustration style with which she presents the complex topic in a lively and convincing way.
Landscapes, architecture, impressive perspectives, factual illustrations, people in motion, colored double pages and vignettes – all from a single source!
The originals of the illustrations are analog paintings and drawings that Andrea Wandinger digitally processes for integration into the layout of the book.
The book project comprises approx. 120 pages and the storyboard already shows a varied approach to the possibilities of book design.
In her picture book, Andrea Wandinger succeeds in combining the thematic range of factual information, atmospheric depictions and a committed message through her illustrations and making them aesthetically accessible.
The implementation of a carefully researched and relevant topic in a cleverly designed picture book, which is characterized and supported by an artistically motivated and very independent illustration style, impressed and convinced the jury.
